Rishyasringa StoryThe Kauravas, the sons of the Pandavas, along with their commanders, attacked Rishyashringha. Rishyashringha was bathing in his lake near the palaces of Hastinapura (Kurukshetra), when he saw thousands of riders approaching. He was told that these were the sons of Pandu coming to fight against him. Poor Rishyashringha became very wild and agitated because he knew that they were enemies that would kill his wife and destroy all his wealth. He prayed to Lord Brahma to save him from this awful situation and promised to serve Him forever in return for the boon of immortality. The boon was granted. Rishyashringha went to the Holy Sea (Adyar) and bathed there. He then went to the forest of Kurukshetra and did penance there, by doing tapasya (sacred austerity). Brahma asked him to come out of the forest and do tapasya in Hastinapura, for this city was destroyed by demon Vrtra. Rishyashringha did what he was asked to do for Lord Brahma promised that he would become immortal by taking birth in his lake at Kurukshetra after completing his tapasya. After a few days, the Kauravas attacked the forest of Kurukshetra and a great battle ensued. Their intention was to kill Rishyashringha and take away all his wealth. But Rishyashringha, who had become immortal by doing tapasya, did not allow them to enter his beautiful city. As they tried to attack him from all sides, he broke their bows and broke their swords easily with a finger on his hand. He broke the chariots of the attacking kings too. The kings were amused by this wonderful conjuring trick played by him on them. They now called him Rishyashringha because 'Rad' means enemy and 'shringa' means the shattering of everything. They feared and respected him. The Kauravas were astonished at this strange behavior of their own brother and tried to kill him. But every arrow that was shot against Rishyashringha bounced off his body like a ball thrown into water, or like a stone thrown at a mountain.
